THE BEST OF ALL SERMONS

MATTHEW 5:1-2

5:1-2“And seeing the multitudes, He went up on a mountain, and when He was seated His disciples Came to Him. Then He opened His mouth and taught them.”

Do you enjoy going to church? If you don’t, I have a feeling that you won’t enjoy Heaven. I am looking forward to sitting at the feet of Jesus as he teaches us all the things that we failed to learn on earth, It will take an eternity for me to learn all of that and I am sure many of you feel the same way about yourselves, right?

Many people, even today, don’t have a building to meet in and must sit outside. This is one of the ways the people were able to hear Jesus preach. They would follow him and when he had gathered a large crowd, he would find a place to sit down and He would preach to them. Jesus had three different areas of ministry to the people during His earthly life. They were teaching, preaching, and healing. First, he would teach them about the law, especially with regards to salvation. Well, they found out right quick that those laws were impossible to keep. So, what was the purpose? Just that, to show them that they could never gain salvation by doing things (works) or by keeping all the laws of God (being perfect). Those laws had absolutely nothing to do with human effort and left sinners totally dependent on nothing but God’s divine grace for salvation. In fact, the law and its demands actually went far beyond the surface meaning of the words and set a standard that is higher than the most diligent student of the law had ever realized.

You know how easy it is when you study something, to just take the words at face value and not worry about what the whole sentence really means. That’s what many of us did in school, especially in college. But that is not the way to study something is it? To know what it really means, one needs to dig deep into the subject and look for things that might be covered in the words but not really brought out in the message. I want you to do a little ground work this week. Study Matthew chapter 5, and Luke chapter 6 starting with verse17, because over the next week or so, we are going to be looking at one of the themes of His teaching ministry, a passage that we have come to know as the Beatitudes. Most people skim over the Beatitudes and just read them and go on, but not us……. Oh, no. We are going to DIG for the underlying meanings of these simple areas of blessings and the rewards that God has promised to those who possess these qualities.

Stay with us, you won’t want to miss one. Oh, and by the way, ON THE WAY HOME, WALK WITH JESUS, and let Him start giving you private lessons, right now.
