BLESSED ARE THE MERCIFUL
MATTHEW 5:7
5:7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.”
In the Christian’s life, there are many blessing granted by God. Two of these blessings are closely linked to each other. They are Grace and Mercy. Grace is God giving us what we don’t deserve, and Mercy is God NOT giving us what we do deserve. Think about that for a moment. Just what, then is mercy? It is being compassionate or being concerned about people and their needs. But the idea is that this concern leads to doing something actively to meet those needs.
The Old Testament tells us about the “mercy seat” which was in the tabernacle over the ark of the covenant. It was the place where the Lord God accepted the sacrifice to atone for the sins of the people. It was here at the mercy seat where God was moved with compassion for the sinful people, and acted to reconcile them to Himself. So, having said that, just what does verse seven mean for us, as Christians? We are to show mercy to others, acting where action is necessary to alleviate the misery of those who are in need. Having compassion on our fellow men.
Most people want to think the worst of others, want revenge, but God showed us a better way to respond. We are to show mercy. Showing mercy is not a characteristic of human nature. Having a merciful heart is a characteristic of one who has received a supernatural “heart transplant”. And what is the reward for showing mercy? Quite simply…God will show mercy to us. ON THE WAY HOME, WALK WITH JESUS and let him give his mercy to your life.
